Personal Goal

A personal goal I have for myself is to create more eco-friendly habits. Specifically, I would like to get better about purchasing reusable products, biodegradable products, and actively recycling. This goal of mine is best supported by Scheuer’s “Critical Thinking and the Liberal Arts.” Scheuer says under ‘Why do We Need the Liberal Arts?’, that a dimension of ecology is “economic citizenship, which means being a productive member of a community.” I believe that in my goals to become a more environment friendly consumer I am helping a community of environmental enthusiasts reach their goals for a more sustainable economy as well. I believe it is part of my duty as a citizen of the world to encourage these habits for myself and for others.

Academic Goal

An academic goal I have for myself this semester is to spend more time learning about the environmental science major here at UNE, including what the classes are, what careers are expected to come out of this major, what I could minor in, and whether or not this might be right for me. This goal of mine is encouraged by the official UNE core curriculum handbook for the college of arts and sciences. In the ‘Core Values Statement’, it says, “Our curriculum is distinctive in valuing student’s environmental literacy- knowledge of the relationships of humans to their environment.” I believe this is a statement of meaning and value as it applies to my education. I would like to be a environmental literate student.
