Questions for Coates #14

  1. After Jones death, it sparked a reminder of the fear of being a black man in this society for Coates. Coates has a realization of the vulnerability he has simply for the color of his skin, and he is reminded of the reality of this, the reality in which he is a target for police. He begins to fear for his own life, as he realizes that Jones could have easily been him.

4. Coates states on page 79, “And so to challenge the police is to challenge the American people who send them into the ghettos armed with the same self-generated fears that compelled the people who think they are white to flee the cities and into the Dream.” I once again ask, what this Dream is, and what should the new dream be? Also what does Coates mean by “self-generated fears” is he talking about the ‘black man’ stereotype of violence and fear?
