- Xenophobia is an intense dislike for another country’s people, specifically the dislike for other or “different” customs, cultures, and languages. This term relates to Covid-19 because the virus originated in China which has lead to the extreme fear and hatred of Asian people. Many governments around the world have used xenophobia to push their own legislations and especially tightening immigration laws of Asian or other foreign people.
- As people were afraid of this virus we did not know much about, they would make it a point to stay away from people seen as “carriers” specifically Asians. This included uninviting Asian artists from performances/showcases, closing borders to countries, and the act of hate crimes.
- Serhan & Mclaughlin’s piece related to Cadogan’s because both speakers experienced hate for the way they look, and the things associated with their appearances.
- I think travel bans when put in place can be effective in slowing virus spread, but only when enforced in the beginning stages of the viral spread. While some people argue that travel bans are essential, but when the ban only targets specific races or countries, it is not doing what it is meant to and is being used to discriminate.
