Learning Outcome #3 (active reading)
Outcome 3 (Active Reading) – Employ techniques of active reading, critical reading, and informal reading response for inquiry, learning, and thinking.
Throughout the course of this semester my annotation skills have developed from being content based to becoming more engaging with the context, making notes that challenge, extend, and question the text and make connections between other sources, the world, and myself. This has become a new form of annotation that was never really stressed to me in school, as a lot of the essays I wrote were content based and more so about the literary devices used to convey a message rather than the extension on the message itself. An example from one of my annotations, “The Limits of Friendship,” demonstrates how my initial approach to annotation was still centered around my high school education.
As shown through these examples of my earliest annotations, I struggled to make significant annotations that challenged, questioned, or extended the text. I think my next few examples of annotations on a later text will show much growth in the depth of my notes.
I believe these annotation examples from Walking While Black are much more in depth and creates more connections/extensions on the narrator’s story, and therefore show a development in my annotation style, quantity, and annotation quality.
