Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

A learning income I feel like I have improved most upon throughout this semester is the ability to connect ideas across disciplines, experiences, and contexts. I think this was best shown through my 1st essay as I discussed my goals for myself this semester and related it to my other first semester classes. A quote from my first essay really demonstrates this connection. I said, ” As a first year student of UNE, I have already become aware of the…

Serhan & McLaughlin Reading Response

Serhan & McLaughlin Reading Response

Xenophobia is an intense dislike for another country’s people, specifically the dislike for other or “different” customs, cultures, and languages. This term relates to Covid-19 because the virus originated in China which has lead to the extreme fear and hatred of Asian people. Many governments around the world have used xenophobia to push their own legislations and especially tightening immigration laws of Asian or other foreign people. As people were afraid of this virus we did not know much about,…

Learning Outcomes

I think the learning outcome that I have most improved in is integrating my own ideas with those of others by use of quotation, summary, paraphrase and analysis. I think this outcome has improved the most for me because of the personal academic writings we have done that require me to integrate both my voice and others’. I think I still struggle to approach writing as a recursive process but perhaps in the process of writing the 3rd essay something…

Questions for Coates HW #16

Questions for Coates HW #16

I think Coates chose the title, “Between the world and me,” based off of the poem by Richard Wright because it captures the horrors of living within a black body, of witnessing the death of other black bodies during a brutally racist time in America’s history. The speaker becomes stunned with fear as he creates a barrier between himself and the outside world. The poem confirms Coates fear of black violence while he writes his letter. 2. Coates says, “I…

Questions for Coates #14

After Jones death, it sparked a reminder of the fear of being a black man in this society for Coates. Coates has a realization of the vulnerability he has simply for the color of his skin, and he is reminded of the reality of this, the reality in which he is a target for police. He begins to fear for his own life, as he realizes that Jones could have easily been him. 4. Coates states on page 79, “And…

Questions for Coates #13

On page 40 Coates describes Howard University as being his Mecca, “a machine, crafted to capture and concentrate the dark energy of all African people and inject it directly into the student body.” He refers to this place as his Mecca because the University was an institution and a community made of young black people from all places, social classes, etc. These people created generations of successful black learners. The site was full of history. He believed the University “captured…

Questions for Coates HW#12

2. On page 17 Coates talks about “being afraid of those who love us most.” He discusses the punishment by form of beatings and lashings of him and his black classmates by their parents. He says that these beatings couldn’t save them all. He implies a relationship between pain, fear, love, and the body. A question I have for him is, does he still believe that fear lives with love, or does he wish his parents had taught him differently?…

Peer Review Revisited

Peer Review Revisited

My 2nd college experience with peer review in this class was a little more successful than the first time. I felt like both me and my partner had a better idea of what to critique and how to give beneficial feedback. My partner gave me specific areas that I could expand my ideas on, which was very helpful for my specific writing challenges. I would rate this time being more helpful than the 1st time.

Project 2 Major Exploration

Project 2 Major Exploration

Framing Statement: In this project I dwelled deep into the environmental studies major here at UNE. Along my journey I discovered what might be my definition of an enriched major, following Ernest Boyer’s insights. I spoke to Professor Bethany Woodworth and learned a lot about her own journey from college to being a professor. She described learning to be fluid, and to expect change in my careers. She didn’t imply this as being a negative, and spoke only positively about…

Writer’s Memo for Project 2

Writer’s Memo for Project 2

I think so far in my essay, I am most unsure about my introduction, and how I am going to conclude my essay. So far I am only at the midpoint, which seems unnerving because I feel like I have already made me big points. I would like some feedback on my introduction and whether what I already have on my paper seems to work well with the prompt and requirements, or if any part of explanation is weak or…
